Monday 3rd August by AJ
On Monday Louisa, Emma, Laura S and AJ all went to a new school about 1 hour drive away, whilst the other group went to the village. The scenery along the way was beautiful and when we arrived we were first taken to visit an Anglo Saxon church just next to the school. It was interesting to see that some of the Churches here are very like Churches in England. We were then paraded into the school following a marching band, accompanied by a group of Tamil students, as both English and a Uniting program were taking place. Three flags were raised, one by Lou to celebrate the programs and then a ceremonial lamp was lit by each group. I lit the lamp on behalf of the ‘foreigners’, as we were called! A cultural show was then performed in English, Singula and Tamil, which was absolutely fantastic and very educational! The students performed traditional dances, songs, speeches and explained the origins of and the religions within Sri Lanka. The tea break following the show was also fantastic with many cups of tea and lots of food! It was then time for us to take over so we took a small class of students to a nearby playground to teach sporting activities in small groups. The children loved the relay races and games and everyone got involved in a big game of football at the end.
Back at the University in the evening, Andy and Lou coached the University football team, whilst everyone else joined in sports such as badminton, squash and swimming.
