Poppy’s Diary
So this week was our final week of the project. We haven’t treated with such kindness and generosity by our schools and the surrounding villages. We have been fed till we can’t eat anymore, and enjoyed running around with the kids for the last time! On Friday we visited Vikumgama to attend the closing ceremony that had been arranged by ourselves and the teacher. As we arrived at the school, we were greeted by all of the children from the preschool dressed very smartly in their school uniforms with bunches of flowers in their hands for all of us. As well as this, the women from the craft and card making classes were there as well as other members of the village. It was a very warm welcome to say the least! The morning started off with a welcome speech from the teacher, as well as one from Sarah on behalf of the team. The chief monk arrived shortly after to open the ceremony. After the religious opening by the monk, we travelled to the first gardening plot in order for the monk to bless it. He hoped that the plots would continue to flourish and that the owners of the land would continue their excellent work with maintaining them! The monk then proceeded to bless each of us as well as other members of the village. The gardening plot was on a very steep slope, and by no surprise a couple of us went flying! The ceremony was finished off by danced by the children and an exhibition of the women’s cards and crafts. I’m sure the jelly and ice cream after a large, delicious lunch was one of the highlights of the ceremony for many of us! There have been some very inspirational projects going on in Vikumgama that will help the villagers to produce income for future generations to come. It was very positive to listen to how the women were going to carry on the project as well as how the following 30 gardening plots were going to start blossoming! It was an excellent day and we will miss such a wonderful village very much!
