Painting in Rassandeniya 13.07.2013 by Beam Kruarat
My personal ‘highlight of the week’ has to be getting started with painting the interior of Rassandeniya preschool. After having spent some time coming up with ideas and purchasing paints last week, I was ready to get to work on Tuesday. My whole day was dedicated to working on the project with Rose coming in in the afternoon to help me. I had downloaded various pictures of animal cartoons onto my laptop the night before, so the first thing I did was ask the teacher at Rassandeniya to select the ones she wanted me to draw on the wall. After having done so, the morning went by at a turtle’s pace as I spent a considerable amount of time trying to get used to drawing on the wall, which is a lot more difficult than drawing on paper! When the work finally kicked off, I began by drawing a tree, which is the core component of what I hope will be a satisfying work of art. It was halfway through my drawing when the teacher came up to me and, quite literally, began hand-feeding me with food. I am still unsure about what was funnier; the actual hand-feeding or the fact that the food she fed me came from what the kids did not finish in their lunch boxes. By midday, I have managed to finish the tree and an owl, which sits on it. After a rather unproductive morning, the pace picked up with the arrival of Rose who added two butterflies and an odd-looking spider to my tree. After having got my creative juices flowing, it was animal after animal appearing on the wall. At the end of the day we had a miniature zoo on the wall: butterflies, an elephant, a giraffe, a lion, a monkey, an owl, a snake, Rose’s spider, a parrot and a zebra. On Friday, the whole team came to Rassandeniya to do the after-school club. I made Oliver, Poppy, and Rose paint my zoo whilst I was outside playing with the kids. At the end of the day, a few animals had been brought to life by the bright colours and I am now looking forward to completing it.
