“Opening Ceremony” – 7th july, 2012 – Jianan Yuan
Today, we went to our Community Learning Centre Opening Ceremony at Vikumgama village. This is Project Sri Lanka 10th and the last community centre because in Sri Lanka 9 is considered a very unlucky number.
We were greeted with beautiful tropical flowers. Sri Lankans are extremely fond of astrology and the ribbon cutting ceremony was at an exact time of 10.02am, it is considered lucky. I was really happy to see the presence of people of Vikumgama there welcoming their new building. The monks began the ceremony by given their blessing. In the centre of the room, there was milk boiling over a small fire. The boiled over milk symbolises good spirit and good fortune. We took turns to light the candle and a piece of string is passed around the room so everyone can hold onto it. I think this symbolises unity and this is the building where it will bring everyone together.
It was followed by speeches from Sarvodaya Officials, Government Officials, Professor Joy and Emily B (Deputy Team Leader). For me, the most emotional speech is from the teacher. In the middle of her speech, she broke down in tear. Even though I did not understand what she was saying, I can see how much this building, this opportunity means to her! It was a very special and emotional moment.
I really enjoyed the dancing. There were four girls holding candles in each of their hand. After the ceremony, the team went for lunch in the village. They put on such a banquet for us, I felt very welcomed into the community. I very much look forward to be working with everyone in Vikumgama!
Once a month, the building will also be used to give medical help to pregnant women. I think that will be interesting to see the medical aspect of Sri Lanka.
