30th July
On Saturday 30th July the team left the University at 7.30 am to travel 5 hours to Colombo to take part in a 2012 Olympic promotion event held by the British High Commission. The team arrived to be greeted by a barbecue and very welcoming people. The day involved a variety of races with people from all aspects of the Srilankan community taking part from the elderly, to orphan children and children with disabilities. The participants and Durham students were divided into different countries with points being gained for each race. The events included a sack race, a lime and spoon race, a yoghurt eating competition and finally a tug of war for deciding positions. The results concluded that England won and awards were presented to the team by the famous Srilankan cricketer Murali which was a great surprise to all. After the event a few members of the British High Commission treated the group to a pizza hut to show their appreciation for our participation and guidance in helping the event run smoothly which was very welcomed by the entire group.
