15th July (Abi)
I always enjoy going into the preschool but today was an especially good day…
We started the day with prayers and though I have never been particularly religious, I always enjoy this as I think it is a soothing start to the day. I enjoy listening to the chanting and am always impressed at how such small children can chant so many prayers.
We then sang some English nursery songs such as Ring a Ring a Roses and it was interesting to see the children also perform them in Sinhala. We then did an Arts and Craft activity where we asked the children to draw their mothers. They really got into this.
After lunch we taught the children the colours today by singing the rainbow song complete with all the actions which the children loved. I also managed to pick up a couple of words in Sinhala and greatly enjoyed seeing the children understand what I was trying to convey.
The highlight of my day was when two of the little boys brought their English books to me in their playtime. They pointed at the pictures, telling me their Sinhala names and then asking me what the names were in English and then repeating them. Despite being so young, these children have such a strong desire to learn and are so eager to absorb new information, even without the prompting of an adult. Already I am starting to believe that I can learn a lot from these children and my experience in Sri Lanka.
