Monday 16th August by Neesha and Becky
Today we were joined by Rach, Joe and Charlotte for the day at Kirelawela. It was lovely to come back to our school, as we hadnt been since the first week of the project. Although we have enjoyed visiting all of the other schools, we felt at home returning to Kirelawela. One thing that stood out particularly was the endless warmth given to us by the teachers, children and community, and it was especially nice to be greeted and addressed by our names, despite not having seen them since the first week.In preparation for the cultural show, we took an ipod and speakers so thatthe children were able to listen to the songs that we were teaching them, however, this turned into a general sing and dance session which the teachers also joined in with! The parents who had come to collect thier children looked in with fascination through the window as everyone danced to S Club 7, ‘Reach’!
The afternoon session was spent trying to prepare items that would be needed in the cultural show, and it was lovely to see familiar faces that frequently attend the sessions. We made paper machee bowls using the balloons and coloured tissue paper, with a few accidental bursts that meant the children had to start all over again! They also made an English flag and a Sri Lankan flag, as these will be used in the cultural show on the 31st August.
The day was finished with other members of the team joining us to spend a few hours painting the wall, which looks fantastic, thanks to Kara artistic abilities! The community once again gathered to watch us, providing tea and snacks which were welcomed breaks! Despite having such an amazing week, it was sad to say goodbye to the teachers, children, and community that have been so hospitable during our weeks spent at Kirelawela, as the next time we will meet will be at the culture show.
