Monday 9th August by Lauren
On Monday, we went to Sri Sumangala Girls’ College in Weligama, where we had planned to give English lessons in the holidays to both the students and staff. When we turned up, there were already some girls eagerly waiting for us.Unfortunately, despite having the principal’s permission to carry out the project on school grounds in vacation time, the school is an exam centre until September, under the control of the police and higher authorities, who decided that it would be too disruptive for the examination students if our activities went ahead. Luckily, Joe had made a friend through the lovely monk at Gandarawatta, who happens to be a teacher, and has got together lots of children from Matara and Weligama (including some Sri Sumanagala students) who have volunteered to give up their holidays to come to some of our English lessons; so all is not lost – look out for a diary entry next week detailing how it went!.
