Wednesday 4th August
Wednesday was Jess birthday so as the others prepared the house for a party Jess, Coutts and Jonty went to teach English at a nearby school. On arrival at the school we were introduced to the principal and we were then assigned to a class of approximately 30 children each, which was intimidating to say the least. Before meeting the groups a giant dragon like lizard crossed our path making Jess squeal with fear and jump a foot backwards (a birthday surprise some may say!)Jontys group was aged 14 so some would say he had the toughest group as their English was already quite good . Coutts and Jess had 6 and 7 year olds so began by teaching body parts and singing head, shoulders, knees and toes and the hokey cokey. After two hours outside in the blistering heat Coutts took her group inside where she played Bingo with colours and Jess continued with a variety of songs and games. Jonty played some cricket with his group. The school was very hospitable and provided us with delicious drinks and bananas. At 12 oclock we departed with kids trying to hold us back and stroking the girls hair. Meanwhile back at the University the rest of the group had made a trip to the local town to buy supplies for Jess party and decorated the house so as Jess, Coutts and Jonty arrived back at the house the rest of the group was hiding to surprise Jess. Jess opened her presents which she was not expecting at all, the presents included a hand crafted elephant and a Sri Lankan cricket T-shirt. We ate cake and drank fizzy drinks and a couple of the students popped round to join in with the celebrations. We spent the afternoon by the pool and then played rounders where the boys easily beat the girls! Jess was presented with a hand painted card and she was blown a kiss by one of the Sri Lankan students who seems to have taken a shine to her. In the evening we borrowed one of the lecturers laptops and watched Toy Story 1 and 2 so the group are eagerly awaiting watching the third on arrival in England.
