Tuesday 20th July by Abi
Kara was fortunately able to join me, Abi, for the second day spent at Gandarawatte. Again we were welcomed by the monk appearing at the entrance to his temple. He ushered us to the school where more children than the previous day had turned up. This may have been due to the continuous rain lightening a bit.The children were involved in some playdough moulding which we got involved with and they copied our attempts at snail making. After that we were encouraged to draw elephants in all the children’s books which they then coloured in. Some children are remarkably efficient with their hands and the degree to which they can colour ‘within the lines’ at such a young age is impressive. We then moved on to singing time and Kara and I attempted to teach the ‘Ring-a-ring-a-roses’ and ‘Oh the howky-cowky’ which they seemed to enjoy.
Tea time with the monk was fun although lengthy as usual and so there wasnt much time left of school when we returned at 11.15am. We managed to escape lunch today as the monk had to be in Matara for 12pm so didnt feel bad declining yet more food. We shared a three-wheeler back with the monk and it wasn’t until afterwards that we realised how odd we must have looked- a monk in full robe with two white girls bumping down the road from the temple. Definitely something the locals were not used to seeing judging by their astonished looks!
