Monday 19th July by Joe
A wet and miserable Monday morning, more resemblant of a British morning than of a Sri Lankan; however, this did not manage to hinder our bright spirits on arriving at Kirelawela for the first time since the opening ceremony.Again, beautiful flowers greeted our arrival, as did many shouts of “good morning” by the prep school children. Our first task was the construction of a leaf through tearing pieces of green and yellow and sticking onto a leaf drawing: good old fashioned ‘cutting and sticking’ should never go amiss! This was followed by singing and playing on the swings and seesaw in the play area. A wonderful lunch had been prepared for us at the teacher’s house, including a wonderful sight of carrots and green beans! We then trooped back to the school, via coffee on the rocks at the teaching assistant’s house. The afternoon saw the arrival of some of the older children after the end of the school day at 13.30. Thus, we decided to ask them to draw pictures of the potential future design of the wall of the school. This request was met with gusto, as many fantastic drawings were soon evident. We then practised the Sinhala and English of words that had been drawn, which included: butterfly, boat, fish and flowers. A brief introduction to sentence structure and word categories was provided for the girls (who were extremely enthusiastic regarding this), which completed a very successful day. We look forward to what tomorrow will bring.
