Thursday 22nd July
Today Rosie and Rachael went to the village whilst the rest of us spent our entire day rehearsing for the culture show that we were performing in later that evening. We were all extremely nervous about the performance as none of us had ever done anything like it before.6.30pm came around quickly and we all found ourselves sat outside the big open air theatre trying to prepare ourselves for the task that lay ahead. The show began at 7.30pm and was opened by some of the Sri Lankan sports students doing a bell dance. All the acts from the Sri Lankan students were amazing.
Finally it was our turn to get up and perform. We opened our show by making a human pyramid and singing everywhere we go. Next we did a short rendition of Charles Dickens Oliver Twist. This seemed to work well and soon we had almost finished our performance without any glitches. However, we then went on to perform the Beatles song Yellow Submarine but were unable to hear the music and it didn’t go as well as we had planned. We managed to pull it all back though by finishing off our performance with the Spice girls song Stop. We were all relieved once it was over but had great fun taking part in it.
The night was then finished off with some traditional Sri Lankan food and drink which was eaten off leaves and drank out of coconuts. Fireworks were then set off and a bonfire was lit. We spent the rest of our evening with the Sri Lankans singing and dancing around the fire.
