Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th July
On Saturday morning we all got up early and headed off to the National Heritage Park known as Worlds End. We were told to set off early in order to make it to the top of the climb before the mist covered the clouds. After a couple of hours on the bus we reached the entrance to the park which was guarded by lots of Sri Lankan security guards with hand guns, we were slightly apprehensive!Being typically British tourists we planned for the weather to be incredibly hot so when the torrential rain arrived as soon as we got off the mini bus, we had nothing to protect us from the cold chill except our shorts and t-shirts as our Sri Lankan friends wore fleeces and anoraks! The climb up was very rocky and unleveled terrain so we started to warm up very quickly! Unfortunately the weather was so bad that when we arrived at the top there was nothing to see..despite not being able to appreciate the amazing views, what we did see was still spectacular. The mist over the mountains had created a mysterious effect and over the cliff edge it looked like the inside of a witchs cauldron. We all agreed that despite being able to see the ground, it was still an amazing feeling reaching the top (although being dripping wet as the rain continued to pour)!
On the trek back down we followed a different route and came across an amazing waterfall. In order to get down to the waterfall, the Sri Lankan took us down a steep muddy bank which was incredibly slipperyso as well as being soaking wet, we were now covered in orange mud! Luckily we all found the funny side and took up the chance to test the waters.after a long drive back we were exhausted and spent the afternoon resting!
Early Sunday morning we were required by the Vice Chancellor to head down to the swimming pool to meet the Minister of Sport, a very important person over here in Sri Lanka who had been invited to Sabragamuwa University to open their newly built Business School and Canteen. He arrived early in the morning with an entourage of 10 cars we believed this meant he must have been important! He was very welcoming to us and has invited us to his house in Colombo for dinner before we head home we are all very excited! We had a nice morning talking to him and watching the ceremony as the new buildings were opened. We got interviewed by the local news channel about the differences between the Sport degree here and ours back in the UK.
Overall we had a very exciting packed weekend!
