Improving navigational skills
Dirk went to Colombo to join Olivia. In the morning Oliver and me went to our first 2 lessons in the Fishery college. These lessons went very well. Our lessons have involved teaching fishermen to practice speaking and writing basic english phrases like introductions, directions and explaining the way to different facilities (the pharmacy, hospital and other boats in the harbor ). Our lesson also involved the topic: “Where is my island?” which means we were teaching directions (north, east, south and west). The pupils needed to explain in which direction they need to navigate the boat to reach their island. We did lots of examples and asked the students to solve these in their books. We and the students enjoyed this lesson.
In the afternoon we taught grades six and seven. We split the group up into their grades and did nearly the same class as the day before.
In the late afternoon we went to see the uncle of Ishan, who is the minister of Hambantota, the district around Moraketiara, his ministeries are business, fishery and health.
He got held up in a meeting, therefore we went to the harbor nearby. When we came back to the house of the minister, unfortunately he was still in the meeting, because of that we decided to come back next week so that Olivia and Dirk can join us as well. Nevertheless during the walk we had a lovely chat with Ishan and his parents. They joined us for the whole way, which we really appreciated.
