This week the “Sri Lanka’s Got Talent” auditions commenced. When we first mentioned the idea of a cultural show to the children, a look of what can only be described as sheer horror appeared on their faces. As soon as we arranged the chairs in a circle around the room and the first victim started to sing everything changed. The giggling boys in the corner soon showed their true boy band desires and enjoyed a dance off in the middle of the room. We originally thought we were going to have to bribe the kids to take part in the show – how wrong we were. The children in Sri Lanka are not at all like the ones in England: they are much more confident when it comes to performing in public. Around 24 acts demonstrated their performance skills and we were astounded at their talent and confidence. Knowing that we had to perform a Sri Lankan song and dance in the show, we knew the kids were going to be hard acts to follow. We soon realised that we were going to be a laughing stock. Nothing new there then. We also agreed to teach the children a western dance and taught them the classic “Yellow Submarine” (following the success of the post grad’s performance).
