Monday 17th August by Becki
Today was the last day of the post graduates time in Sri Lanka (well, outside of Colombo at least). We had been invited to go see their show they put on with the children from their schools. So after a slow morning in which many of the girls who participated on the second venture up Sri Pada used wisely, namely, doing nothing except lying and resting (plus the odd occasional stretch), we headed off by bus to Maskeliya to meet the post grads. We were invited back to the house they had been living in to meet their host family and to share an awesome Sri Lankan lunch followed by pineapple and lime drinks at a neighbour’s house. Then on to the big junior school to see the show, which was awesome! We arrived a little late, but fortunately they were running on Sri Lankan time, so it resulted in our being early. The show kicked off with an introduction and speeches from the post grads in Singhalese, followed by western Jackson and Dylan songs the children had learnt along with dances such as ‘ the salsa’, to much amusement from the crowd. The children also performed a short drama depicting a very Sri Lankan adaptation of Little Red Riding Hood, which was followed by a very entertaining rendition of a Singhalese song sung by the post grads in a pitch that included notes that clearly such voices were never meant to hit. The post grads also performed a short Singhalese dance they had been learning, which went down a storm with the locals.
When it was time for us to leave, we were all smiles and aching faces, and spent the rest of the day back at Moonbridge brainstorming our own show and planning potential acts. We can’t wait!
