Tuesday 21st July by Fiona
The morning at the pre-school started off with the children aged between three and six colouring in teapots. This was then followed by them learning the song, ‘I’m a little teapot’ which we all enjoyed joining in with. We then decided to try and teach them some other English songs such as ”Head, shoulders, knees and toes’ and their current favourite, ‘the hokey kokey’ which results in fits of giggles all round, including the two teachers. After some playtime outside with the swings and many games of ‘catch’, the children sang to us songs in Sinhala. As school drew to a close they sang the Sri Lankan national anthem with their teachers. One of the practices that we still have not got used to is at the end of the day, all of the children bow to us as a symbol of respect. In return, we touch the top of their heads to bless them.
The afternoon consisted of us teaching the children about one of our favourite topics, food. The task was to make their own restaurant menu and to talk about what food they like to eat. Creating a restaurant menu highlighted more cultural differences between Sri Lanka and England. In Sri Lanka, households take great pride in their cooking and therefore, Sri Lankan people tend not to eat out often. After going through pronunciations with the whole class, we went outside to do different activities such as playing badminton, volleyball and parachute games. To end the day, we got all the children together to play musical chairs which proved to be a huge success.
