23rd August (written by Emma)
Another day began as the sun rose above the palm trees at Moon Bridge. In the morning the girls bought sarees for the cultural shows, aided by the advice of Kasuni, one of the young adults from Gandarawatte. In the afternoon Bobbie and I went to Weligama, to the house of Mrs Janani Abeywickrema, a teacher at Ahangama school. Here there were 8 children, aged 7 to 11, waiting eagerly for us to do a comprehension of ‘The Lion and the Mouse’, from Aesop’s fables. We got them to read through the fable, answer questions relating to it, and identify opposite words. Next we moved on to do a wordsearch, and then played hangman. After the formal teaching had finished we spent the next hour teaching songs including ‘I like the flowers’ and ‘The Pirate Song’, before Mrs Abeywickrema’s son sang to us ‘The Ugly Duckling Song’, which Giulia had taught him. So, after we had drunk our tea the afternoon at Weligama ended.
