18th August (written by Nicole)
The day at Gandarawatta began with the preschool lesson as normal. As usual we started with singing songs as a group, it’s really rewarding to see all the children joining in now as many of them used to sit and watch, now they all join in and know most of the actions. We decided today to decorate the children’s handprints with coloured tissue paper. This was very successful and the final masterpieces are now up on the fall creating a brighter learning atmosphere. The children seem to really enjoy the activities and we are happy to think of new challenging activities each day. Their teacher is also pleased with our work and asked us to keep up with the art activities. Once the art session is completed we have outside play which allows us to play with the children normally hide and seek or being pushed on the swings. Just as we had begun the outside play Rev. Damasarha asked Maddie and I to accompany him to Dondra to see the market. The trip was very enjoyable and he bought us a small gift to be given to us all at lunch as we were to eat at his sisters house today. We arrived at her house and were presented with a table full of food which we tucked in to. After this we were very full but another three courses were then brought out. It was all delicious. It was then time to leave to do some painting of the building. It is now looking very impressive everyone is putting all their efforts into making it look amazing. We have begun to add animals now to the Sea and forest I look forward to seeing the final product. As the show is nearly upon us we have begun dance lessons in the afternoon, Kirsti and I carried on teaching the Mika dance which is really coming on and the children really enjoy learning an English dance. In return we have been learning a Sing halese dance which we hoe to perfect and perform in the show. After our dance lessons we continued with teaching many of the songs and poems which will also fill up the show. Everyone’s dedication will shine through at the final production.
