Ahangama week 6
Having had some time to reflect over our work and discuss our concerns with Joy and David, (who came to see us on Saturday), we decided to alter our teaching methods once again.
At Dharamarama school Giulia developed the topics she introduced in the first weeks, using simple drama sketches and role plays to teach grades 3-5. Jason continued with his computer classes. All lessons sessions ended with team word games which we felt was a successful way to engage the young children. The week has been tough and frustrating at times.
We are unable to teach formal classes because of our ignorance of Sinhala and the children’s limited knowledge of English. We receive very little response from he children who are used to communal-type teaching methods that focus on reading and reciting rather than conversing.
Sangaratha classes however continued successfully, with the addition of volleyball games after class. The first hour was spent teaching two small formal classes, followed by games and word games. Afternoon drama classes are progressing well. Third graders are learning their scripts for the Ugly Duckling and have begun to make their own costumes and props whereas Fourth Graders are slowly learning their parts for Peter and the Wolf although greatly enjoying the classes. Teacher classes continued as usual on a Wednesday afternoon. Due to a clash with Sangaratha classes, Jason took over these classes whilst Giulia taught at Sangaratha. Despite a slight decrease in number, the teachers present appeared to appreciate and learn a lot from the sessions.
This week has been surprisingly full of extra-school activities. On Wednesday we went to Ranjith’s (chef) house, where he taught us to cook rice and 4 different curries. On Thursday Joy invited us for dinner at Jaga guest house and on Saturday morning we left for Kandy where we spent our weekend!
