Ahangama week 1-2
After a difficult and drawn-out start we are finally settling into Ahangama village.
We have moved into a house in Weliwatta, central Ahangama, which is conveniently situated near both schools. Although hygiene appears not to be a great concern here, and we are still grappling with the village waste disposal methods (digging a hole or burning everything in a Sunday morning bonfire/bbq), it’s great for us to be right in the middle of the village, near the main temple, amongst Ahangama residents and a close walk to the shops.
Stray animals and huge insects have seem to feature frequently in our everyday life. Jason is now known at school and around the village as the Man-with-the stick. A wave of his stick sends stray dogs running with their tails between their legs! Giulia still cannot believe she encountered a huge 1 metre Iguana on her way to drama class!
Our week at the moment is as follows:
Monday-Friday we work at Dharmarama with grades 3-5, running drama classes in the afternoons and a teachers English class on Wednesday. On Thursday and Friday we teach older children at Sangaragatta school. Ros and Duncan run music after school club at Dharmarama on a Tuesday.
