Developing art, music, sport and cultural activities with Sri Lankan children and students
The sharing and exchange of cultures lies at the heart of all Project Sri Lanka activities. For volunteers, immersion in the ‘Sri Lankan’ way of life is, for many, a genuinely life-changing experience and one which benefits all participants.
Volunteers share the culture and leisure pursuits of the western world – its music, art, drama, poetry, sports, games and so on, with Sri Lankan people of all ages.
Whilst Sri Lankan five year olds may be learning English nursery rhymes and songs from our volunteers, older students may be learning Shakespeare or popular song lyrics from the west. Meanwhile our volunteers gain countless opportunities for engaging in the culture of the east – learning to play the drums of Kandy, to sing the songs of the island, to dance its traditional dances, to play its games and wear its dress.
It is the tradition of the project that groups of volunteers working together stage a cultural show with the people of the communities with whom they are working. Such shows attract a wide audience of parents and friends and are a splendid celebration of the sharing of cultures.
